David Douglas Duncan…DDD…his very initials show that he is no ordinary. In text messages and on the social networks, the letter D represents “a smile”. So, a smile times three! It is the same that lights up Duncan’s face when he talks about his friendship with Pablo Picasso. There was something extraordinary about their friendship. When we recall that the one who introduced Picasso and Duncan to each other was the mythic Robert Capa, it is clear that their meeting was unique…special…unrepeatable. Duncan became the witness of Picasso’s private world! He himself says that he has been a very lucky man. And who cold disagree? Not only was he able to enjoy the Master’s friendship, but Picasso trusted him so completely that allowed Duncan to bring his Leica into the most intimate and private spaces, even the bathroom.
The photo of Picasso in his bath was the very first one that Duncan took of the Master. It was 8 february 1956, a magical date for Duncan because it marked the beginning of a long friendship that would last 17 years until the artist’s death.
How is it possible that the very first photo should be that one in particular? They must have felt an incredible affinity for one another, and indeed Capa said to Duncan: ‘i think that you two could become good friends’. And so they did.
Duncan documented their friendship in thousands and thousands of photos, which in turn have produced numerous
exhibitions and nine books, including this latest one.
These nine books testify to the link between the two man, two living legends…but above all they testify to life!
